Clinical Decision Support Protocols in Patient Monitoring

The Holy Grail of patient monitoring has always been to not only acquire and display digitized patient data but also to offer guidance to the caregiver as they manage the patients regimen of care. Philips has recently released Protocol Watch, their new addition of evidence-based care protocols to their patient monitoring line.

By monitoring specific clinical parameters, the system can aid caregivers by recommending care tracks based upon established protocols. Especially when used in conjunction with a clinical information gateway to gather lab and peripheral diagnostic device parameters. (in this case to denote PCO2<32 mmHg as part of the standard sepsis protocol). This minor addition of device intelligence might be the first step in clinical diagnostic devices to going from diagnostic bystander to actively assisting in patient care.
