The two work with an old actress Aunt Lily (role played by Mariam Hopkins) who also happens to be Martha’s aunt. Aunty Lily is also an elocution trainer.
Karen gets engaged to her fiance Joe Cardin (role played by James Gardner) and a marriage date is fixed. Joe is relative of Amelia Tilford (role played by Fay Bainter) whose grand daughter Mary (role played by Karen Balkin) happens to be a student of the school that is administered by Karen & Martha.
Karen punishes Mary for a lie. Mary decides to take revenge on Karen. She cooks up and floats a story saying that Karen & Martha are lesbians. Karen meets Mary’s aunt Amelia to explain her stand. But Mary accuses Karen and Martha as being lovers and lesbians.
The succeeding events get complicated and significantly bothers Joe. Joe trusts her fiance. Both Karen & Martha sues Amelia. The suit makes things worse as the hungry media gets involved in it. Joe wants to continue his relationship with Karen. But Karen is uncertain whether Joe truly believes her. She decides to discontinue her relationship with Joe and decided to move with Martha to some unknown place. But Martha was against this as she wants Karen to marry Joe. But the fact is Martha started loving Karen from the moment they met.
Later Tilford comes to know the truth and apologize to both Karen & Martha. However, Karen declines her apology and Martha gets weary and decides to sleep. Karen leaves her alone and goes for a stroll. When she returns, she finds the door locked. Karen becomes doubtful & breaks open the door only to find her beloved friend hanging. Subsequent to the funeral, the movie ends with Joe watching Karen going alone.
